Lt. Col. Danjuma’s Book: Captivating Insight Into Civil-Military Relations In Nigeria

Saturday, January 20th, 2024, I had the pleasure of reviewing the book “Civil-Military Relations in the Nigerian Army: My Sojourn and Experiences in the Department of Civil Military Affairs” written by Lieutenant Colonel Zando Danjuma, Commandant of Command Secondary School Akwanga. The 139-page memoir chronicles his six-year tour at the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs (AHQ DCMA), showcasing his roles as a Staff Officer, Assistant Director of Administration, and Military Assistant. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, finding the author’s narrative both compelling and accessible, as he masterfully shared his experiences and valuable lessons in simple language.
The book is organised into Nine well-structured chapters that provide a smooth and enjoyable reading experience. Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma’s firsthand accounts of pivotal activities at the AHQ DCMA offer a unique military perspective on civil-military relations (CMR) in the Nigerian Army. I commend the author for his dedication to immortalising his experiences and for creating a remarkable work that sheds light on the complexities of military service and civil affairs.
Reviewing this intellectual masterpiece was an honour, especially amid distinguished personalities from the military (both serving and retired), government officials, traditional leaders, and individuals from various walks of life. The book launch, held at Hall C, TY Buratai Block, Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, was a grand occasion that underscored the significance of Danjuma’s contribution to our understanding of civil-military relations in the Nigerian Army and the nation as a whole.
I highly recommend “Civil-Military Affairs in the Nigerian Army” to anyone intrigued by the complexities of military service and its intersection with civil responsibility. The author’s commendable effort has produced a valuable resource that promises an enlightening experience for readers.
