IBB at 85: You’re Truely a Statesman – Gov. Radda

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has congratulated former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 85th birthday, describing the former military leader as a statesman whose contributions have left an enduring imprint on Nigeria’s political and administrative history.
Governor Radda, in a congratulatory message issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, particularly commended General Babangida for his historic role in the creation of Katsina State on September 23, 1987, alongside Akwa Ibom State.
The Governor said the creation of Katsina State represented a defining milestone in the history of the people, as it gave them a distinct political identity and provided an opportunity to pursue development based on their own priorities and aspirations.
According to Governor Radda, the people of Katsina State would continue to remember General Babangida for the decision that led to the establishment of the state. He described the development as a landmark event that opened a new chapter of growth and development for the people of the state.
“The people of Katsina State will always remember General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for giving our state its identity and creating the opportunity for our people to chart their own course of development,” the Governor said.
He added that the decision to create Katsina State “remains one of the defining moments in our history,” underscoring the enduring significance of the former military president’s administration to the state.
Governor Radda further noted that General Babangida has over the years remained a prominent national figure whose years of public service and leadership continue to occupy an important place in Nigeria’s political history. He acknowledged the former Military President’s long-standing contribution to the country and joined his family, friends and Nigerians across the country in celebrating the milestone.
“As you celebrate your 85th birthday, we join your family, friends and millions of Nigerians in thanking Almighty Allah for a life of service to our country,” Governor Radda said.
The Katsina governor also prayed for continued good health, peace of mind and longevity for General Babangida, asking Almighty Allah to bless the former military leader with many more years filled with mercy and blessings.
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Katsina State, Governor Radda wished the former Military President a happy birthday and prayed for his continued well-being,” the statement said.
General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as IBB, served as Nigeria’s Military President from 1985 to 1993. His administration remains associated with several major political and administrative developments in the country, including the creation of Katsina State in 1987.
The congratulatory message was signed by Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Katsina State and dated August 17, 2026.
