General Buratai Commiserates With Lagbaja’s Family, President Tinubu

The Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Yusufu Buratai commiserates and expressed deep sadness over the loss of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who served as the Chief of Army Staff from June 2023 until his passing on November 5, 2024.
Lt. Gen. Buratai (rtd), the Betara of Biu and Garkuwa of Keffi described late Lagbaja as a true embodiment of discipline and dedication, whose passing leaves a void in the Nigerian Army and the nation at large.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, a true embodiment of discipline and dedication. His passing leaves a void in the Nigerian Army and the nation at large.”
He also extended his heartfelt commiseration, condolences to General Lagbaja’s wife, Mrs. Mariyah Abiodun Lagbaja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Acting Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, and the entire Nigerian Army. He prayed that Allah would forgive Lagbaja’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.
While recalling his time as COAS, General Buratai praised Lagbaja’s leadership abilities, noting that he had appointed him Commander of the 9 Brigade in Ikeja and later Commander of the 2 Brigade in Uyo – a brigade General Buratai had also commanded.
“Upon his promotion to the rank of Major General, I posted him to Army Headquarters as the Director Campaign Plan in 2020. The nation has lost a strategic commander,” General Buratai recalled.
Late Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja was a renowned military officer who served in various capacities, including as General Officer Commanding Headquarters 82 Division and Headquarters 1 Division. His military career spanned over three decades, with notable participation in operations such as Operation Harmony IV, United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Operation Lafiya Dole.
Commenting on Lagbaja’s versatility, Buratai says, “his leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping the Nigerian Army into the formidable institution it is today. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the nation he served with great zeal and commitment.
“In this difficult time, I pray that General Lagbaja’s family, friends, and colleagues find solace in the memories of his remarkable life and service. May his dedication to Nigeria inspire future generations to follow in his footsteps.
“Rest in peace, General Lagbaja. Your service to our great nation will never be forgotten.” General Buratai commiserated.
